Maximize your score with these proven test-taking strategies.

Time Management is Key

The TOEIC Reading section (Parts 5-7) gives you exactly 75 minutes to answer 100 questions. Time management is often the biggest challenge for test-takers.

  • Part 5 & 6 (46 questions): Aim to finish these in 15-20 minutes. Don't spend more than 30 seconds on any single question. If you don't know the answer, guess and move on.
  • Part 7 (54 questions): This leaves you with 55-60 minutes for reading comprehension. You will need roughly one minute per question here.

Listening Section Strategies (Parts 1-4)

Part 1: Photographs

Analyze the picture before the audio starts. Ask yourself: Who? What? Where? Focus on the main action and the relationships between objects. Beware of words that sound similar but mean different things.

Part 2: Question-Response

Pay close attention to the first word of the question (Who, What, Where, When, Why, How). This dictates the kind of answer you need. Beware of answers that repeat words from the question—they are often traps.

Parts 3 & 4: Conversations and Short Talks

Skim the questions and options before the audio plays. Knowing what to listen for will significantly improve your accuracy. Listen for keywords related to the questions.

Reading Section Strategies (Parts 5-7)

Part 5 & 6: Incomplete Sentences / Text Completion

Look at the options first. If they are different forms of the same word (e.g., create, created, creation, creative), it's a grammar question. Look at the words immediately before and after the blank. If the options are entirely different words, it's a vocabulary question; you must read the whole sentence for context.

Part 7: Reading Comprehension

Do not read the entire passage first. Read the questions first to know what information you are looking for, then scan the text to find the answers. For questions asking about the main idea or purpose, check the first and last paragraphs.
